Cannabinoid Deficiency

Did you know that anandamide is a naturally occurring endocannabinoid produced by the human body? It is known as the bliss molecule because of its impact on human joy. Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome occurs when the body does not produce enough endocannabinoids. It is associated with conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Migraines, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. CBD inhibits the breakdown of this essential molecule.

These treatment resistant conditions are a source of constant frustration, pain and fatigue. According to the anxiety and depression association of America, 20% of fibromyalgia patients suffer from anxiety or depression.  Additionally, statistically significant differences in cerebrospinal fluid anandamide levels have been documented in migraineurs, and advanced imaging studies have demonstrated ECS hypofunction in post-traumatic stress disorder. Additional studies have provided a firmer foundation for the theory, while clinical data has also produced evidence for decreased pain, improved sleep, and other benefits to cannabinoid treatment and adjunctive lifestyle approaches affecting the ECS. (Russo, 2016)

Cannabinoids produced by hemp are analogous to endocannabinoids produced by the human body. Renowned cannabis researcher, Dr. Ethan Russo, suspects that this is why people suffering from a cannabinoid deficiency find some relief with cannabis supplements. Unfortunately, evidence of this is lacking and research is still in the early stages. However, we do know that cannabidiol is effective for the treatment of pain, according to the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. Suffers of cannabinoid deficiencies often have pain control issues and are treated with addictive medications such as hydrocodone and oxycodone. As a non-addictive alternative, CBD Oil provides pain relief for patients suffering from chronic pain.

As always, seek advice from your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement or medication.  As a Nurse, I typically recommend a sublingual tincture to be the most effective and safe method of consumption.
